History
I had been looking for a GTO hardtop off and on for about 6 months when I learned of this one for sale through an acquaintance at the 2000 Jim Butler Performance Nationals. The car was located in Asheville, NC and had been originally delivered to Zane Waters Pontiac in Greensboro, NC. From the rust free nature of the car I have assumed the car has spent its entire life in North Carolina before ownership passed to me.
The car was built at the Pontiac, MI plant in April 1970 and was shipped to Zane Waters May 6th, 1970. The suggested retail price for the car was listed as $4352.16.
At some point the original WT code 400 had needed a rebuild and instead of freshening up, the motor was pulled and replaced with a YD code 400 2bbl engine. This engine is still currently in the car, although topped with a '71 intake and Quadrajet carb. However, I do have the original engine awaiting the day where I can find the time and energy to swap it back in.
Since I brought the car home, I have converted the manual drum brakes to power discs, added aftermarket gages, swapped a '67 intake for a '71, and have done some detailing in the engine compartment. Future plans call for getting the A/C working, replacing bent axles, and more detailing.
